Designed innovative space spool mechanisms with 3.9? load capacity, balancing strict weight and volume limits using Agile methods and creative gear layouts.
ALTEN Technology undertook the development of a compact and lightweight spool system for unfurlable space antennas, focusing on a high-force satellite antenna deployment mechanism. Their approach involved identifying critical design challenges, leveraging existing spooling technologies, and conducting analytical trade studies to collaboratively down-select concepts. Utilizing CAD and mechanical analyses, a recommended architecture was selected and subsequently reviewed in a system design review. This process led to the successful design of concept models for a space-based, high-force spool mechanism that adhered to strict volume and weight constraints, achieving a remarkable 3.9 times greater load capacity than comparable mechanisms. The project incorporated Agile methods for rapid execution and developed creative gear layouts to reduce complexities, effectively transforming theoretical concepts into practical, space-applicable solutions, with two unique design concepts recommended for implementation.
