Testing under Martian gravity? ALTEN delivered a PID closed-loop drop-test fixture with repeatable, tunable, fully logged drop conditions.
For an aerospace client advancing a sample return helicopter program, ALTEN Technology designed and delivered a drop test fixture capable of simulating Martian gravity to support flight qualification testing. Working through Agile sprint planning, the team developed the system requirements, designed the test fixturing, implemented closed-loop control with a graphical user interface, developed precision motor control, and carried the system through verification and validation. The delivered fixture uses a PID closed-loop controller to maintain consistent system tension while repeating and logging test conditions, including vertical drop height and horizontal speed, and was engineered so the client can adjust controller gains and tune the system to meet a wide variety of test conditions. ALTEN delivered the fixture to the client site and provided a full knowledge transfer with a system overview and training. The multidisciplinary team contributed Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Software, and Quality Engineering and Project Management, leveraging tools such as SolidWorks, Arduino, MATLAB, PID closed-loop control, load cells, proximity and limit switches, motor torque control, 80/20 modularity, IGUS linear motion, and a custom GUI.
