ALTEN Technology undertook a project to enhance an existing wearable ECG data recorder, transforming it into a medical device heart monitor with significantly improved capabilities. The approach involved detailed analysis and testing to characterize the device’s energy consumption, identifying key areas for optimization. Firmware implementation was then optimized to reduce energy usage while meticulously maintaining the performance of the real-time ECG waveform analysis algorithms crucial for detecting cardiac events. As a result of ALTEN Technology’s efforts, the finished system not only exceeded its lifetime requirements but also achieved FDA 510(k) clearance, allowing it to go to market. The device now offers low-power, long-term Electrocardiogram (ECG) recording and analysis, successfully tested against the ANSI/AAMI EC57 standard, with its battery life dramatically extended from 24 hours to an impressive 7 days.
